Restaurant Review: Bosa Donuts

15 Feb

After hearing much about the acclaimed Bosa Donuts, Brendan and I decided to splurge and try them. We stopped in on our way to work. Set in a location that was a Taco Bell in its previous incarnation, it may look a little unassuming, but its very worth the step inside.

Let me give it to you straight: this place is AWESOME. Open 5a – 10p and a full 24 hours (with the drive thru) you can get your donut on anytime you feel like it. Already a win.

Then, the donuts themselves taste crazy fresh, and are very light and airy. Translation = they don’t make you feel like you ate a brick of sugar. They almost make me think of chinese fried bread I used to eat in my youth. The selection of donuts is lovely and they have some fritters and cinnamon swirls for those that aren’t into sprinkles or chocolate glazed. I loved that they had some fun new flavors like strawberry glazed and coconut in a variety of styles.

The prices were great, and we were about to get a whole dozen and donut holes for the office without taking out a small loan. Everyone at work loved them and I think that there was a consensus that this is the new shop in town.

Really, the donuts are fantastic and they seem to be a small local chain (2 locations) which is much more desirable to me than a megacorp (and the equivalent of a +5 bonus on their check). Most important, though, everything is delicious and I can’t wait to go back. Mmmmm…Donuts! :)

Product Review: Chocolate Ibarra

Look for the Red & Yellow Box!

Today’s post is in regards to my favorite warm beverage: Ibarra. Usually stashed away in the Mexican Foods aisle of your neighborhood grocery store, Chocolate Ibarra shows up in a little squat hexagonal box, striped in red and yellow. Inside you will find several bricks of cinnamon chocolate. The bricks are like little pies, with wedge indentations for ease of serving. It’s a pain to cut it with a knife, though, so I usually just break things down with a hammer or a rubber mallet and put in as much as I want (usually more than required).

In my opinion, Mexican chocolate is different better than the usual stuff.  Mixed with warm milk you can feel the chocolatey smoothness and really taste the spices. Or you can always eat a chunk straight out of the box like I do when I’m being particularly decadent about it.

This little box is great for your pantry as it can provide a quick yummy snack and it keeps really well. The Ibarra link above with take you to their website which has some fun recipes. Seriously – Chocolate Ibarra is wicked awesome. It’s been a favorite of mine since I was a child and I still think its great! Go get a box and try it out! :)

PS: FYI, Abuelita is a Nestle Brand version of Ibarra. I feel that though adequate in a shortage, it’s an inferior product. Stick to the original…buy the Ibarra.
