A Flood Story

27 Jan

Welcome to 2010 – year of the flood. So on January 3rd, 5:30 pm, we were coming home from an awesome D & D session when noticed some water around the garage. As it looks like this when the neighbors wash their cars, we weren’t really worried. However, when we got to the front door we could hear water, and when we looked inside it was raining from the ceiling and there were a couple of inches of water on the flood in certain areas.

We rushed around turning off water and generally freaking out. It turns out that a little plastic thingymajig on the union that connects the toilet to the wall and brings in fresh water snapped out of old age and was gushing water for hours. Our awesome neighbors came to help out bringing an extra shop vac and together we were able to get a bunch of the water up off the floor.

Meanwhile the ceiling was still dripping and our new, just put it in ourselves wood laminate flooring was swollen with water and squishing out water wherever it could. Brendan’s brothers had gotten there by that point and were helping us tear out the floor and underlay material so that the floorboards could begin to dry out.

Brendan had been on the phone with the insurance company almost immediately after we shut off the water, and so by 8:30 guys from a house-drying-out service had shown up and began placing huge blowers and de-humidifiers around the house. We counted 22 blowers and 2 de-humidifiers. They pretty much told us to grab some stuff and go find a place to stay.

We grabbed clothes and the dog and went to my mom’s house and stayed there for almost a whole month. In the mean time, they packed up our bottom story, including the kitchen where the most damage was, and tore down all the ceilings downstairs. Combined with the no floors upstairs, it was certainly not a fun place to be. We’ve visited several times to get the mail, extra clothes, and to meet with various worker peoples but it is always pretty depressing.

Once the ceilings were out, we noticed what looked like termite damage, so today, we are meeting with the termite inspectors, but luckily that is covered by the HOA.

As of yesterday, we have been moved into a rental condo near our other condo (except swankier) back in Tempe and so we are in a new place again. It’s fully furnished in classic elderly-lady/interior design awesomeness of the early eighties style. But it has cable, and is on the lake, so that is nice. We’ve already sunk several hours into MTV…

Anyhow, it looks like we’ll be out of our home for another 2-6 weeks as they slowly clean things up and piece it back together. Fingers crossed for new cabinets, people, fingers crossed.

I’ll update as we go forward, but for now, this is the story….and these are the pictures (at least a few of the hundreds I have taken during this process…
